According to the Verdantix annual survey of 301 EHS decision-makers, 3% of firms will roll out drones for environmental mapping at all relevant locations, a further 3% at multiple locations and 4% at only one location in 2017. Small test projects are planned by a further 7% of firms.
Environmental mapping drones help in conducting topographic surveys to assess site feasibility, offer in-depth understanding of the surrounding area and provide granular information on environmental risks. Detailed and high-resolution images can be gathered and surveys can be conducted faster and at a lower cost as compared to helicopters, planes or ground-based measurements. It comes as no surprise that industries with extensive physical assets such as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, mining, and construction are the frontrunners in adopting this technology.
The competitive landscape for drones is currently an interplay of various vendors ranging from pureplay software providers for imaging, mapping and analytics such as Airware, DroneDeploy, esri, Hexagon Geospatial and Pix4D to drone equipment manufacturers and drone service vendors such as Aeryon Labs, Novadrone, PrecisionHawk, SenseFly and SPECTAIR. The next three years will witness increased consolidation, with advanced analytics and enhanced mapping capabilities becoming the key value add as well as a differentiating factor among drone providers.
